Symbolic Rewards and Motivation

Motivational imagery for personal growth

Hello friends,

Let’s have a chat about the impact of symbolic rewards on motivation, shall we?

What Happened?

I recently discovered a Yoga Studio near my new home in Lewisham. Just yesterday, I joined, booked my first session via an app, and attended it. This morning, the app informed me that I’ve earned 10 reward points and labelled me as a “Chilled Yogi”. Quite amusing, isn’t it? It certainly brought a smile to my face.

Let’s pause and think about this for a moment.

At a glance, the reward system doesn’t seem particularly impressive. The 10 points and the “Chilled Yogi” title are purely symbolic. In fact, I’ll probably be 80 years old before I gather enough points for a free workshop (and no, I’m not joking).

What Do We Learn?

I find this form of symbolic recognition incredibly powerful. It’s effective in both our personal and professional lives. Reflect on this: when was the last time you acknowledged a colleague’s work with a “well done”? Or expressed your gratitude with a heartfelt “I wish to thank you for...”? These gestures cost us nothing, but if we’re not mindful, we may miss these valuable opportunities to appreciate others.

What Else?

By the way, I’m off to my next Yoga session this evening. I now want to know what’s the next level after “Chilled Yogi”!

So, what lifts your spirits? Feel free to drop me a message on X (@SantoshPanditUK).

Cheers,

Santosh Pandit
